The Fawn is growing up.

The young buck

I took my camera today when I walked Loki – it was a delicious fog and would have been silly not to get a photo or two.fog 026

As luck would have it the young buck that was the focus of my camera as a fawn was looking to get away from a guy with a camera that was getting a bit too close.  The young buck was headed for a very busy street and I mentioned to him that it would not be a good way to go so he turned and ran past the dude with the camera. Cool!

Really he was eyeing Loki on the end of my leash and that helped push him away from dancing in-between impatient drivers on the busy road over the embankment. And I did mange to get his great escape in a photograph or two.

Last I saw of him he was prancing into the condo’s with the dude following him.  To be fair the deer do make for good stories and photographs and the dude most likely lives in the condo’s and was out cleaning up the fallen leaves and lo, here comes this young buck. Pulled  out the camera to capture the moment on his phone. Luckily the deer here are used to us humans and know it is better to just walk away.

Washed Wool

Other things 023

Funny that http://didyoumakethat.wordpress.com/2013/10/20/fabric-focus-wool/ has wool as the Fabric Focus.  This is wool that I have washed – sanitized in the washing machine for about 2 hours with my hemp slippers to felt the wool. I would do this three or four times when doing some deep cleaning on rugs and slippers to get a felted wool. These materials are part of my stash of thrift store material purchases. So no great loss if I bung it up.

As the main body is plaid each peace was individually cut to match the plaid. Wool coat front side panel As this is a curvaceous pattern the end matching should be close but it is too soon to tell. The wool cuts like butter and no fraying involved! Cut wool

Here is my posting of this pattern last year  https://austerity101.wordpress.com/2012/07/11/now-for-my-jacket

For this coat I have lengthened the pattern to knee lengthThe pattern adjustment. The beige will be the front facing and the under front panel. It will also be used for a collar which I have to create and the under sleeves.  I haven’t ironed the wool as it will undo some of the felting and I am hoping that this process will keep me dry and warm this winter.

Other things 022 This bright blue will be the lining.  It is sand washed silk and very thick.  It also is a thrift shop find of 20$ for 4 meters – plenty to line a long coat.

In between the wool and silk I will put in a cotton quilting felt to add to the warmth. Each piece will be cut to the felt – so it will take a bit before I can post the finalized garment.

As the World Cooks – a foundling cookbook from 1938: Pumpkin Pie Recipe

As the World Cooks – a foundling cookbook from 1938: Pumpkin Pie

As the World CooksThis was found at the local thrift shop for $2.50.  The title is serious from a time of very serious matters.  It was compiled and printed in 1938 by volunteers for charity.

Over the next while I will  photograph the pages and share this gem.  The recipes are diverse and from around the world as it was known in Massachusetts in 1368.

As the world cooks - whoI am starting with the pumpkin pie as it is Thanksgiving here in Canada this coming Monday and Pumpkin pie is the go to desert for the occasion.

Pumkin Pie

All of the recipes assume that you know how to put it all together.  Some pages it is only the ingredients and the rest is up to you.  This one is fine but is only for the filling – these older women assume that you the reader will know the recipe off by heart for pastry.  I have a semblance of a pastry recipe in the back of my memory but I will always look for one just to make sure.    If I am feeling rich I will use a unsalted butter for a fine pastry instead of the lard that is typically used here in Canada – the lard box always has a pastry recipe on it and is decent enough for family and friends.

Have fun!

I was thinking of John Lennon’s Imagine song in my morning shower when I imagined peace – two men walking together.  What a simple concept – yet so hard for so many to understand.  We all have the option of peace.  We can imagine peace instead of slight, grief, horror.

Give it a try – it is easier than you think!
