This morning

when I got dressed, I was pleased that everything I chose for this warm summer day I made from natural fibers.  Green silk camisole, folklore vintage pattern cotton tap shorts, folklore vintage pattern walking skirt hemp summer cloth skirt with insert of cotton laces just above the bottom hem and topped off with a bolero that I made from hemp summer cloth. The bolero is a ongoing work in progress but it is fun to ware until the afternoon heats up.

This evening, the bolero is put away for the heat of the day and I am about to finish the red cotton slip.  Just a firm ironing and the buttons that are the small mother of pearl buttons.  It should look pretty good!

I tried it on for fit and it is good!  It will feel better when the outside temperature is below 10C!  It is now neatly folded in my cedar chest for the duration of summer.

The Starting Point:

I am good a finding what I need.  Sometimes it is not what I want but I do find it fills my needs. I have been picking up fabric at the local thrift shops for years.  I have many large pieces of wool for just such a  project.

To make my jacket I first needed to resize the pattern for my mature figure.  Just adding an inch to the pattern only worked with the hips and bust.  As the original pattern is for the wearer of corsets the waist needed to come in.  And not just in – the sides needed to be graded with shoulders being left at…

Boticanial Beach

Stunning even in the fog!

Boticanial Beach

The silent power of the sea speaks loudly here!  Barren rock with hidden tide pools lush with urchins, sea weeds and a  nursery for the young fish.

A nice shelter made of driftwood – next storm will reveal the roots of an old tree long washed into the water some winter night long ago.

The starkness of this diversity is where we find prosperity – not in the sameness that so many of us desire.

The sewing Room;

It is actually the kitchen table – the room is packed away for each dinner.

DSC01068  I shortened the skirt a bit with pin tucks at the bottom.  There are a few places that the folds are out of sync with the strips and I will work on them over the weekend – maybe!

Capture 2  I found this on Bells Archives as article in the CBC news online.  It is the traveling suite 1002, same sleeves, cuffs and two rows of buttons and in plaid.

Cool Critters!

I love his color.  We let him outside after the photo shoot!

Another winged beauty.

When this dragonfly is in the air he resembles a small bird – I think it has to do with how his wings are coloured.  When he first landed I though he was a drone!

My dream: a poem

‘the sun is high, just shy of noon

I stand in this warmth – confused

beneath my feet, a once familiar place

is but dust and gravel.

‘All around me are the hues

of desolation, textures long buried

fray the landscape of brown and gold.

I pan the horizon, shattered

gray green tuffs plot an

unseen venue, familiar but broken.

‘From behind me a man speaks,

Only one word he utters “Look”

the sound of the syllable barren

I am compelled, commanded!

‘Stretching his arm, the owner

points to a glimmer of light.

Upon the horizons edge. It is small

and hard to see anything other than

the gritty landscape.

‘This glimmer of light, nothing

more than a reflection draws my focus.

I see it now, small but growing

against the bleakness of this

foreign landscape.

‘As it draws closer, I can not see

how it moves over such a barren

landscape. Yet is moving, closer

and now I recognize it to be a

cruise ship.

‘But how can this be, gliding over

land like it was on water?

The movement causes ripples

where the two meet!

This is not so! A ship cannot ride land

like water! And Yet

‘ the gritty uneven land did bob and weave

not unlike the ripples of a pond

The ship drew nearer and it was

a gleaming spectacle

in these hues of destruction.

‘My perplexity deepened upon

inspection of passing rows upon rows

decks and windows sealed and void.

This spectacle of white appeared lifeless

as it moved forward to an untold destination.

“Look” I turn to my left and there is blue

where there was none before. Long

jetties skimmed the surface

revealing familiar blue hues of water.

The hulk of white slipped into this cleared port

the jetties clicked to a closed

position keeping the gritty sludge at bay.

‘Once docked a bay door

pressed down to the parched earth.

A single automobile disembarked

and sped along a dusty path

to some unseen destination.

‘It was then that I awoke, my

breath shallow and my heart pumping,

I looked to my familiar bedroom, clamed by

the breaths of my partner beside me.

I slept once more and yet this dream

haunts me in its entirety.

To make my jacket I first needed to resize the pattern for my mature figure.  Just adding an inch to the pattern only worked with the hips and bust.  As the original pattern is for the wearer of corsets the waist needed to come in.  And not just in – the sides needed to be graded with shoulders being left at the original pattern size.

I cut a new muslin in some red cotton that I picked up on the cheap. This  muslin will be the interlining of my new jacket.  I started with the pieces of silk but when I realized that the pattern would need more tweaking. The silk is another thrift shop find of an oversized designer dress in a beautiful mocha that I undid and repurposed for this project.   This new muslin allowed me to baste it together, fit it, rip it apart cut new  side back pieces  (i have a very broad upper back)  and recut the side fronts down for my not so large bust.

DSC01004

It looks good and feels better.  I will now recut the silk  for the lining once I have adjusted the length on the pieces that were changed. Then I will cut the wool plaid – this time I can match the pattern on the plaid as it is one nice long piece.

The black sleeves shown in the photos is a hemp silk organic cotton blend.  It was a small piece left over from when I made kimono’s for me and my partner.  They will be a part of the lining as the repurposed silk dress did not have enough for the sleeves.

The lining is now finished.  Now on to the wool!

An idea of how it will look finished.  The red inter lining will not show through the layers but will give added warmth for winter (West Coast winter that is!)
