The Fawn is growing up.

The young buck

I took my camera today when I walked Loki – it was a delicious fog and would have been silly not to get a photo or two.fog 026

As luck would have it the young buck that was the focus of my camera as a fawn was looking to get away from a guy with a camera that was getting a bit too close.  The young buck was headed for a very busy street and I mentioned to him that it would not be a good way to go so he turned and ran past the dude with the camera. Cool!

Really he was eyeing Loki on the end of my leash and that helped push him away from dancing in-between impatient drivers on the busy road over the embankment. And I did mange to get his great escape in a photograph or two.

Last I saw of him he was prancing into the condo’s with the dude following him.  To be fair the deer do make for good stories and photographs and the dude most likely lives in the condo’s and was out cleaning up the fallen leaves and lo, here comes this young buck. Pulled  out the camera to capture the moment on his phone. Luckily the deer here are used to us humans and know it is better to just walk away.

Botanical Beach, Juan De Fuca Provincial Park, Vancouver Island, Canada

Botanical Beach is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is part of the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park. It is an amazing place even in the morning fog.  We struck camp at 6:30 am  and made it down to Botanical Beach for the  8:09  am low tide of 1.5 feet.  It is a half mile  hike down to the beach from the parking lot.  The fog was heavy on the trees tops.

At the bottom of the steep terrain the beach opens up to the pacific ocean.   It is a vast space. Camping 2013 197 The blue of the ocean hides under the fog. The fog does not detract from the astounding space of Botanical Beach.

The diversity is not only in the plant and animal life, it is compounded in the rock formations.

Tide pools abound –  both small and large like the one above that mirrors the trees up on the cliff.

Gentiel the cat and fulfilling her (unbeknowest to her) bucket list of camping on the west coast

Camping 2013 008

I needed some time to disconnect and relax. A vacation was required after a long and busy tax season!

Gentile has only been with us for a short time and only now just letting us get close to her.  She came to live with us after her long time (13 years)  care giver died.  Just before her care giver died, Gentile, went from place to place and lived a very unsettled time.  So to leave her alone was not an option! To take her someplace else for our trip would be too much a reminder of when she lost her care giver so the only option left was to take her with us.Camping 2013 018

So we packed up the gear, the food, Loki (the dog who lives up to her name), Gentile and headed for a little lake outside of Port Renfrew on the west coast of Vancouver Island named Fairy Lake.

She wasn’t too happy with the car ride at first – too many vet visits in the years gone by – but the quilted bag allowed her to settle with ease on my lap.

Once we were unpacked and somewhat settled, we put her on a long leash and she would wonder the site following the sun!

Gentile and Loki enjoyed relaxing in the sun – Gentile even let Loki get very close as long as Loki was still!

As much as she enjoyed laying in the sun whenever possible she was very happy to get home and curl up on my desk.Camping 2013 005

My partner and I were happy to accommodate the bucket list of Gentile even though she did not yet know that it was an experience that she wanted and would love.

Boticanial Beach

Stunning even in the fog!

Boticanial Beach

The silent power of the sea speaks loudly here!  Barren rock with hidden tide pools lush with urchins, sea weeds and a  nursery for the young fish.

A nice shelter made of driftwood – next storm will reveal the roots of an old tree long washed into the water some winter night long ago.
