the basin – day 183 (half a year)

just over 6 months ago Canada was put into pandemic mode – you know the space that i mean. todays picture is a random selection from this half a year. some of these photos may have been posted here before but not many.

183 days ago i decided to post a picture each day of the basin during this pandemic lock down. being raised in a city, i know too well that sometimes if can feel very bleak. as this pandemic rages on, i have felt the tensions get cranked up with each passing month. these tensions have been in the news and here in my little community as well.

the wander on a walk about who found their way to our basin once said “this is paradise”. sharing this bounty would be a good think for me. Yes, think. my brain, like yours, is in constant motion and i have found that living here the basin brings a certain calmness to the viewer (me and those around me).

this calmness has been priceless at this time. when my soul yearns for my daughter so recently passed, and when it is hard to bear, the soothing rhythm of the waves, the call of the birds and the glisting of the rays of the sun have been a potent medicine. it brings me back to where i need to be, here and now. it is a great way to start my day.

thank you for participating in this project of mine. solace is found in activity. the activity creates a rhythm that allows us to move forward and move past the little bits that ail us.

please share any activity that you have found helpful in these unprecedented times. apparently we have another year or more of this disease spreading through our populations and we all can use a new idea or two to help while away the time.

and what helps us feel better is about the little connections through our days. and that includes sharing a little bit of ourselves.

oh, for those out there who are adamant that this disease of CoVid – 19 is all a hoax, and refuse to protect your self in this belief. fine, don’t – its your casket.

really, it is not about you, it is about we. we who are young and need the wisdom and the teachers who are all the more vulnerable to this disease. we who are old and have brought much love and wisdom to our families and friends. we who will help build the skills for the next generation in all areas of life, like the line men who keep the electrics going, or the carpenters who will help build your new home. we who are the bakers and cooks who help protect our most vulnerable. we who serve and protect to the best of our ability on any given day.

so when you wear your mask to protect others, you are not only protecting the ones that you love but also the ones that work seamless behind the scenes keeping our modern world ticking along. and as far as i can tell, all of us really enjoy our modern world.

i once told an unhappy neighbour that ‘the World of I is a very lonely place.” so many of us are alone now with the threat and carnage of CoVid – 19 and yet there are places where we can meet in imagination. let us put aside anger (yes that can be done with practice) and learn more about those around us. that is always a good place to start and like Aristotle once said, a good beginning is halfway there (or so i was told generations ago and it stuck).

be kind, stay safe and be well. oh, and many thanks for dropping by

the basin – day 179

clouds are visible this morning – a very nice change – the smoke is slowly clearing from our skies – be kind, stay safe, be well

the skies are beginning to clear though the smoke is still very strong. it tastes horrible and sticks to everything. venturing outside can only be for short excursions. the blue of the sky popped through yesterday and that was lovely.

the two pictures below are both from Sept this year and are both looking in the same direction as this mornings photo. such a difference.

from Step 11, 2020 – our first day of smoke filled skies
this was Sept 3, 2020 before the files of the west coast stifled our air

three geese in the grey of the mornings smoke – be kind, stay safe, be well

the smoke continues this morning – a heavy blanket of grey. it rained yesterday and that felt nice. I was thinking this morning as I wondered the beach that the planet will be here long after we are gone, so don’t fret the global warming issues, the planet will be fine and will reboot with new and exciting species. too bad we will, as a species, will not be.

the basin – day 177

serenity – calm in the storm of smoke and fire – we are well as long as we stay in doors – be kind, stay safe, be well

I was thinking this morning of our local raptors, not the basketball team but the eagles, falcons and osprey that make the basin home. They rely on their sight to eat and it has been very hard to see these last days.

Meteorologists are saying that this smoke will blow away – lets hope as I am missing the blue of the sky as are all that reside here on the west coast. And lest us hope the fires on the west coast are also laid to rest.

not in black and white – be kind, stay safe, be well

The grey vastness of the smoke that fills our sky is very disheartening. The warmth of the sun is hidden somewhere above, an instant change of seasons for us below.

first the right foot forward… be kind, stay safe, be well.

The heron on the post. Easy to tell from a distance as they are very large birds. The smoke is mixed with lots of fog this morning – so much so the sun wasn’t able to break through. Fog looks the same but it carries sound so much better than smoke so you know it is the fog. Oh, the sea lions have made it into the basin, they bark just so and loudly to boot. Be kind, stay safe and be well. Thanks for dropping by.

from up the beach a ways on a long lens

a typical sight each morning, the boats rushing off to fish for salmon – with the smoke and fog it looks like he has just crossed over a magical threshold
